Brian Michael Bendis
Brian Michael Bendis is one of the most successful, most well known and last (but by no means least) busiest comic creators working today. As well as comics he has also worked in TV, movies and video games.
Born August 16, 1967 in Cleveland, Ohio, he decided in his early teens that he wanted to work in comic books. H began writing and drawing his own comics soon after. After studying at Cleveland Institute of Art he began sending submissions to comic companies and was rejected each time. Difficult to imagine that happening today!
Although now best known for his writing his first professional work was an an artist for local newspapers and magazines. His comic book break was at Caliber Comics in the early 90’s. Later he worked for Image Comics and Oni Press where his work included “Sam and Twitch” and “Powers”, the latter winning him the second of his five Eisner Awards in 2001 for “Best New Series”. His first, won in 1999, had been for “Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition”.
In 2000 he made the move to Marvel Comics. His first Marvel series was Ultimate Spider-man, a title famous amongst other things for it’s 111 issue partnership with artist Mark Bagley, one of the longest in comic book history. Writing duties on other Ultimate titles followed before a move into the Marvel mainstream where he has been ever since. Highlights have included a well received run on Daredevil, Civil War, House of M, Avengers Disassembled, Secret Invasion, Guardians of the Galaxy and Dark Avengers. (For once the cliche is true – it would be quicker to list the comics he hasn’t worked on!) He has also continued to produce his own comics for independent publishers.
